Colletotrichum fioriniae

Colletotrichum fioriniae (Marcelino & Gouli) Pennycook, Mycotaxon 132(1): 150 (2017) [2016]

Index Fungorum number: IF 553097; Facesofungi number: FoF 02891

Holotype: MFLU 16-2675

Saprobic on dead branch of Ailanthus altissima. Sexual morph: Undetermined. Asexual morph: Conidiomata 0.08–0.2 mm (x̄ = 0.11 mm, n = 10) diameter, black, acervulus, globose, oval, solitary, gregarious. Setae very few observed, medium brown, smooth-walled, 2–3-septate, 60– 80 μm long, base cylindrical, 3–5 μm diameter, apex ± acute, Conidiophores to 35 μm long, hyaline to pale brown, smooth-walled, septate, branched. Conidiogenous cells 6–13 × 1–4 μm (x̄ = 9.9 × 2.6 μm, n = 20), hyaline to pale brown, smooth-walled, cylindrical, opening 1.5–2 μm wide, collarette or periclinal thickening observed. Conidia 9–17 × 3–5 μm (x̄ = 14 × 3.8 μm, n = 40), L/W ratio 3.2, hyaline, smooth-walled, aseptate, straight, cylindrical to fusiform, with both ends acute or one end round and one end slightly acute. Appressoria not observed.

Material examined: ITALY, Province of Forlı`-Cesena [FC], Via Pietro Nenni—Forlı`, on dead aerial branch of Ailanthus altissima (Simaroubaceae), 6 May 2015, E. Camporesi, IT 2473 (MFLU 15-1249).

GenBank: ACT: KY514337, CHS: KY514340, GAPDH: KY514343, ITS: KY514346, b-tubulin: KY514349.

Notes: No culture is available for this species; hence direct DNA extraction from conidiomata was carried out. Colletotrichum fioriniae was described from a scale insect, Fiorinia externa and has been also recorded as a pathogen on Persea americana, as well as an endophyte from Mangifera indica (Damm et al. 2012). Our strain of C. fioriniae (MFLU 15-1249) clusters with the ex-type of C. fioriniae with a 100% bootstrap support (Hyde et al. 2017) and this is the first report of C. fioriniae from Ailanthus altissima. A few setae were observed in our specimen (Hyde et al. 2017).
