Colletotrichum lauri

Colletotrichum lauri Jayaward., Camporesi & K.D. Hyde, in Hyde, He, Zhao, Perera, Jayawardena & Camporesi, Index Fungorum 347: 1 (2017)

Index Fungorum number: IF 552357; Facesofungi number: FoF 02890

Etymology: based on the host genus Laurus.

Holotype: MFLUCC 17-0205.

Saprobic on dead leaves of Laurus nobilis L. Sexual morph: Undetermined (after 8 weeks). Asexual morph: Conidiomata 0.05–0.4 mm (x̄ = 0.17 mm, n = 10) diameter, black, acervulus, oval, solitary, gregarious. Setae minute, not observed with unaided eye, straight or ± bent, abundant, dark brown, becoming paler towards the apex, opaque, smooth-walled, septate, 1–6-septate, 47–85 μm long, base cylindrical, slightly inflated, 3–9.5 μm diameter, apex acute to rounded, smooth. Conidiophores simple, to 15 μm long, hyaline to pale brown, smooth-walled. Conidiogenous cells 4–16 × 2–4 μm (x̄ = 12.9 × 2.9 μm, n = 20), hyaline, smooth-walled, cylindrical to slightly inflated, often with short necks, opening 1–2 μm wide, collarette or periclinal thickening observed. Conidia 13–19.1 × 3–6 μm (x̄ = 15.7 × 4.9 μm, n = 40), L/W ratio 3.2, hyaline, smooth-walled, aseptate, straight, cylindrical to fusiform, with both ends acute or one end round and one end slightly acute. Appressoria not observed

Culture characteristics: Colonies on PDA flat with entire margin, aerial mycelium white, reverse turning black with age. Growth rate 55–60 mm in 7 days. Conidia in mass, salmon to orange

Material examined: ITALY, Province of Forlı`-Cesena [FC], San Lorenzo in Noceto—Forlı`, on dead aerial leaves of Laurus nobilis (Lauraceae), 25 May 2015, E. Camporesi, IT 2505 (MFLU 15-1374, holotype), ex-type living culture MFLUCC 17-0205, MFLUCC 17-0206.

GenBank: MFLUCC 17-0205: ACT: KY514338, CHS: KY514341, GAPDH: KY514344, ITS: KY514347, btubulin: KY514350.

MFLUCC 17-0206: ACT: KY514339, CHS: KY514342, GAPDH: KY514245, ITS: KY514348, b-tubulin: KY514351.

Notes: Colletotrichum lauri falls within the Colletotrichum acutatum species complex, forming a separate branch with 85% bootstrap support and 1.00 Bayesian posterior probability and forms a sister taxon with C. godetiae (Hyde et al. 2017). Colletotrichum lauri differs from C. godetiae in having larger conidia (C. godetiae has a L/W ratio of 2.9), however, the conidia of strain CBS 862.70 of C. godetiae had a L/W ratio of 3.4. Setae of C. godetiae are 2–3-septate and are longer than those of C. lauri. Colletotrichum lauri differs from the type strain of C. godetiae by 2 bp changes in ACT, 6 bp changes in CHS, 13 bp changes in GAPDH, 3 bp changes in ITS, and in b-tubulin 9 bp changes.
